In the middle decades of the nineteenth century, a small group of religiously inspired moral reformers began one of the most ambitious and unlikely social movements imaginable. They committed themselves to bring about the immediate emancipation of millions of African Americans held in bondage, at a time when slavery was one of the most powerful economic and political forces in the United States, and growing stronger.
